Once yu start making bread you begin to think about the best way to slice it. Sure, you can use a knife. We did for a while. we always ended up with slices that were too thick for a sandwich (unless that’s how you like it). I searched for a way to get nice uniform slices every time. I chose the Bread Pal Bread Slicer. I have been 100% happy with it. I like the Bread Pal for two reasons: It’s foldable so that it can be stored away without taking up too much space. The grooves are cut at various distances apart so you can choose your desired slice thickness.
When a bread recipe calls for butter use unsalted butter. (Did you know that by law the only preservative allowed in butter is salt?) I have found through experimentation that European-style butters produce the best results in breadmaking – and baking in general. Butter adds flavor. More importantly, butter makes bread that is moist and will stay fresh longer. Butter helps to lubricate the gluten strands, making them easier to expand. But mostly, butter adds flavor (there, I said it again.) European-style butter has a higher butterfat content and as a result I prefer it. Currently, I’m using Plugra butter but I’ve used other brands in the past.
