Pyrite is a common, soft iron sulfide mineral. Its coloration being somewhat similar to gold has earned it the moniker “fool’s gold”. It has marginally valuable industrial uses such as in the development of sulfur oxide and sulfuric acid. However, euhedral pyrite cube crystals are quite rare and few sources for them are known. Northern Spain is one of the only localities on earth where specimens are found with any degree of regularity. These specimens are completely organic, uncut pyrite crystals that occur naturally in their marlstone matrix. They have not been altered from their original state in any way.
