Pneumatic Actuators Cylinders

. ACTUATORS A Pneumatic actuator mainly consists of a piston, a cylinder, and valves or ports. The piston is covered by a diaphragm, or seal, which keeps the air in the upper portion of the cylinder, allowing air pressure to force the diaphragm downward, moving the piston underneath, which in turn moves the valve stem, which is linked to the internal parts of the actuator. Pneumatic actuators may only have one spot for a signal input, top or bottom, depending on action required. Valves require little pressure to operate and usually double or triple the input force. The larger the size of the piston, the larger the output pressure can be. Having a larger piston can also be good if air supply is low, allowing the same forces with less input. These pressures are large enough to crush objects in the pipe. On 100 kPa input, you could lift a small car (upwards of 1, 000 lbs) easily, and this is only a basic, small pneumatic valve. However, the resulting forces required of the stem would be too great and cause the valve stem to fail. This pressure is transferred to the valve stem, which is hooked up to either the valve plug (see plug valve), butterfly valve etc. Larger forces are required in high pressure or high flow pipelines to allow the valve to overcome these forces, and allow it to move the valves moving parts to control the material flowing inside. Valves input pressure is the "control signal." This can come from a variety of measuring devices, and each different pressure is a different set point for a valve. A typical standard signal is 20100 kPa. For example, a valve could be controlling the pressure in a vessel which has a constant out-flow, and a varied in-flow (varied by the actuator and valve). A pressure transmitter will monitor the pressure in the vessel and transmit a signal from 20100 kPa. 20 kPa means there is no pressure, 100 kPa means there is full range pressure (can be varied by the transmiters calibration points). As the pressure rises in the vessel, the output of the transmitter rises, this increase in pressure is sent to the valve, which causes the valve to stroke downard, and start closing the valve, decreasing flow into the vessel, reducing the pressure in the vessel as excess pressure is evacuated through the out flow. This is called a direct acting process.

Valves & Actuators

1. VALVES A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically valves fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate category. In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure. The simplest, and very ancient, valve is simply a freely hinged flap which drops to obstruct fluid (gas or liquid) flow in one direction, but is pushed open by flow in the opposite direction. This is called a check valve, as it prevents or "checks" the flow in one direction. Valves have many uses, including controlling water for Irrigation, industrial uses for controlling processes, residential uses such as on / off & pressure control to dish and clothes washers & taps in the home. Even aerosols have a tiny valve built in. Valves are also used in the military & transport sectors. Valves are found in virtually every industrial process, including water & sewage processing, mining, power generation, processing of oil, gas & petroleum, food manufacturing, chemical & plastic manufacturing and many other fields.

Pulleys

Pulley A pulley is a wheel on an axle that is designed to support movement of a cable or belt along its circumference. Pulleys are used in a variety of ways to lift loads, apply forces, and to transmit power. A belt and pulley system is characterized by two or more pulleys in common to a belt. This allows for mechanical power, torque, and speed to be transmitted across axles. If the pulleys are of differing diameters, a mechanical advantage is realized. A belt drive is analogous to that of a chain drive, however a belt sheave may be smooth (devoid of discrete interlocking members as would be found on a chain sprocket, spur gear, or timing belt) so that the mechanical advantage is approximately given by the ratio of the pitch diameter of the sheaves only, not fixed exactly by the ratio of teeth as with gears and sprockets. In the case of a drum-style pulley, without a groove or flanges, the pulley often is slightly convex to keep the flat belt centered. It is sometimes referred to as a crowned pulley. Though once widely used in factory line shafts, this type of pulley is still found driving the rotating brush in upright vacuum cleaners. Agricultural tractors built up to the early 1950s generally had a belt pulley. It had limited use as the tractor and equipment being powered needed to be stationary. It has thus been replaced by other mechanisms, such as power take-off and hydraulics.

V-Belts

V-BELTS V Belts are flexible machine elements used for the transmission of power over comparatively long distances. These belts provide a compact, resilient transmission and are used extensively in automotive and industrial drives for fans, generators, pumps etc. They are specified by the belt type and section identification, and also by the circumferential length of the belt. On page 2, there is a diagram of the two types of V Belt construction. HOW DO V BELTS WORK? Only the angular sides of a V Belt come in contact with the sides of the pulley groove, and most of the belts (excluding the classical cross sections) run approximately flush with the top of the pulley. See diagram A. The pulley groove must be deep enough to provide a space below the belt, ensuring that belt contact is on the sides only. This space also assists in heat dissipation from the belt. The groove angle of the pulley is made slightly smaller than the belt section angle and the belt tends to wedge itself into the groove. Additionally, when tension is applied to the belt, the compression zone underneath the reinforcing cords will tend to bulge into the pulley side walls. Therefore this 'wedging' of the belt into the pulley groove enables the belt to grip the pulley and thus, transmit power. ADVANTAGES: V Belt drives provide many maintenance advantages that help in the daily struggle to reduce equipment repairs and to hold forced downtime to the lowest possible level. They are an economical method of transmitting power. They are clean - No lubrication is required. They are efficient - Drive efficiency averages 94.98%. They possess smooth starting and running characteristics. They cover extremely wide horsepower ranges. They permit a wide range of driven speeds, using standard electric motors. They dampen vibration between driving and driven machines. They are quiet in operation. They act as a "safety fuse" in the power drive because they refuse to transmit a severe overload of power, except for a very brief time. V Belts wear gradually, making preventative or corrective maintenance simple and easy to plan in advance.

Electric Motor

ELECTRIC MOTOR An electric motor is an electric machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. In normal motoring mode, most electric motors operate through the interaction between an electric motor's magnetic field and winding currents to generate force within the motor. In certain applications, such as in the transportation industry with traction motors, electric motors can operate in both motoring and generating or braking modes to also produce electrical energy from mechanical energy. Found in applications as diverse as industrial fans, blowers and pumps, machine tools, household appliances, power tools, and disk drives, electric motors can be powered by direct current (DC) sources, such as from batteries, motor vehicles or rectifiers, or byalternating current (AC) sources, such as from the power grid, inverters or generators. Small motors may be found in electric watches. General-purpose motors with highly standardized dimensions and characteristics provide convenient mechanical power for industrial use. The largest of electric motors are used for ship propulsion, pipeline compression and pumped-storage applications with ratings reaching 100 megawatts. Electric motors may be classified by electric power source type, internal construction, application, type of motion output, and so on.

Wire Rope & Chain

WIRE ROPE & CHAIN ASSEMBLIES WIRE ROPE Wire rope is a machine with dozenseven hundreds of individual wires which are formed and fabricated to move or operate at close tolerances to one another. When a wire rope bends, each of its many wires slides and adjusts to accommodate the differences in length between the inside and outside of the bend. The sharper the bend, the greater the movement. Every wire has three basic components: the wires, strands and core. The core may be either fiber (FC) such as sisal, manila or jute, or an Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC), which is actually a smaller wire rope within the strands of the outer wire rope. The wires are predominantly constructed from high-carbon steel, but may also be formed from various metals such as iron, stainless steel, monel or bronze. Carbon steel wire rope is manufactured in various grades, including Improved Plow Steel (IPS), Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) and Extra Extra Improved Plow Steel (EEIPS), which designate the nominal strength of the wire rope. EIPS is the most commonly used and manufactured grade today. CHAIN ASSEMBLIES Alloy chain slings are often selected when operating under high temperatures or rugged conditions that would abrade or destroy other types of slings. They are flexible, durable and long lasting, ductile, easy to inspect, collapsible for convenient storage, and will adhere securely to the contours of a load. Although chain will show little or no stretch at rated capacity, it does have the ability to elongate up to 20% prior to failure. This elongation serves as a visual warning sign prompting users to remove the sling from service before injury or damage is sustained from a broken chain sling. Perhaps the most advantageous feature of a chain sling is its ability to be repaired. Nearly any damaged component discovered during an inspection can be repaired and restored to useful condition. During the repair process, slings will be refurbished, proof tested and recertified, offering an economical alternative to new chain sling replacements.

Sprockets

.SPROCKETS The sprockets are connected to the shaft by one of several available methods. However, connection by a keyway and grub screw is common. Sprockets give the same drive speed, increased drive speed or decreased drive speed. This is achieved by varying the number of teeth in each sprocket. The same number of teeth gives the same speed to the driven shaft. If the driven sprockets teeth are less, then the speed increases and if the driven sprockets teeth are more, this will decrease the speed of the driven shaft.

Roller Chains

Roller Chain Components

Plate

The plate is the component that bears the tension placed on the chain. Usually this is a repeated loading, sometimes accompanied by shock. Therefore, the plate must have not only great static tensile strength, but also must hold up to the dynamic forces of load and shock. Furthermore, the plate must meet environmental resistance requirements (for example, corrosion, abrasion, etc.).

Pin

The pin is subject to shearing and bending forces transmitted by the plate. At the same time, it forms a load-bearing part, together with the bushing, when the chain flexes during sprocket engagement. Therefore, the pin needs high tensile and shear strength, resistance to bending, and also must have sufficient endurance against shock and wear.

Bushing

The bushing is subject to shearing and bending stresses transmitted by the plate and roller, and also gets shock loads when the chain engages the sprocket.

In addition, when the chain articulates, the inner surface forms a load-bearing part together with the pin. The outer surface also forms a load-bearing part with the roller's inner surface when the roller rotates on the rail or engages the sprocket. Therefore, it must have great tensile strength against shearing and be resistant to dynamic shock and wear.

Roller

The roller is subject to impact load as it strikes the sprocket teeth during the chain engagement with the sprocket. After engagement, the roller changes its point of contact and balance. It is held between the sprocket teeth and bushing, and moves on the tooth face while receiving a compression load.

Furthermore, the roller's inner surface constitutes a bearing part together with the bushing's outer surface when the roller rotates on the rail. Therefore, it must be resistant to wear and still have strength against shock, fatigue, and compression.

Cotter Pin, Spring Clip, T-Pin

These are the parts that prevent the outer plate from falling off the pin at the point of connection. They may wear out during high-speed operation, therefore, for this application, these parts require heat treatment.

Configration
