Base oils are important basic raw materials for any lubes, viz., engine oils, gear oils, industrial oils, metal working fluids, hydraulic oils & greases. In most of the lubricants 70-90% ingredient is base oils. As per API classification Base oils can be grouped majorly into five groups, i.e., Group-IIIIIIIVV. The base oil characteristics are very important in determining the quality of the finished product.
A lubricant is a substance introduced to reduce friction between moving surfaces. It may also have the function of transporting foreign particles. The property of reducing friction is known as lubricity. A good lubricant possesses the characteristics of high boiling point, low freezing point, high viscosity index, thermal stability, hydraulic Stability, demulsibility, corrosion prevention, high oxidation resistant.

Bitumen is an oil based substance. It is a semi-solid hydrocarbon product produced by removing the lighter fractions (such as liquid petroleum gas, petrol and diesel) from heavy crude oil during the refining process. As such, it is correctly known as refined bitumen. The vast majority of refined bitumen is used in construction primarily as a constituent of products used in paving and roofing applications. According to the requirements of the end use bitumen is produced to specification. This is achieved either by refining process or blending.
Fuel oil is a fraction obtained from petroleum distillation, either as a distillate or a residue. Broadly speaking fuel oil is any liquid petroleum product that is burned in a furnace or boiler for the generation of heat or used in an engine for the generation of power, except oils having a flash point of approximately 40 °C (104 °F). Fuel oil is made of longhydrocarbon chains, particularly alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatics. different organizations may have different numerical specifications for the six fuel oil grades. The boiling point and carbon chain length of the fuel increases with fuel oil number. Viscosity also increases with number.
The commonly known diesel oil also used to call as Gas oil. The word "diesel" is derived from the family name of German inventor Rudolf Diesel who in 1892 invented the compression-ignition engine. Diesel fuel is produced from petroleum and from various other sources. Petroleum-derived diesel is composed of about 75% saturated hydrocarbons, and 25% aromatic hydrocarbons.The average chemical formula for common diesel fuel is C12H23, ranging approximately from C10H20 to C15H28. Falsh point of Gas oil is 60 Deg C minimum.
