The most commonly used type of shielding is gonad and ovarian shielding. used to protect the reproductive organs of a patient that is with in child bearing years or younger.it is used on both male and female patients. The reproductive organs should always be shielded if they are going to be within 5 cm of the primary beam during the exam. Although this is the official rule gonadal shielding is widely practiced even if the distance is more than 5 cm.
