MIFARE cards are NXP-Semiconductor chips used in contact less smart cards and proximity cards. The name MIFARE has been derived from Mikron FARE collection system which covers seven different kinds of contactless cards.

Suitable for adding MIFARE DESFire EV1 applications to an existing HID Prox-based access control system, the MIFARE DESFire EV1 / Prox converged credential provides a wide range of backwards compatibility with existing systems and is available with HID Prox and/or magnetic stripe technology.

Adhesive cards are used by simply printing on the cards peeling off the back and pasting. Also known as sticky back cards, they fall into two categories:

• Paper backed
• Mylar backed

These cards are made up of PVC material having a lustrous front and a mylar back which provides the quality of being able to absorb heat. Clean and scratch free cards designed with a smooth surface. These are also long lasting with existing print-head life but requires extensive care while handling.

Polyethylene terephthalate, or PET as it is better known, is a non-toxic and biodegradable substance. It exhibits many of the desirable benefits without the side effects associated with a PVC, Paper and Laminates. Unlike PVC cards, PET does not crack or break. Contrary to PETs appearance, it is impossible to tear.

Its thinness is what makes PET so durable. Most plastic cards are 30 mil thick. PET is only 8-10 mil thick. Because of this, PET cards can be bent and curled and still snap back to shape.

Contact chip cards work on a contact area of approx. 1 sq cm consisting of several gold plated contact pads which when inserted into a card reader provides electrical connectivity. The communication is enabled between a smart chip and the host which can be a computer or a mobile phone. They work on the power supplied by the reader. The physical characteristics, electrical connecter position and shape, electrical characteristics and functionality are provided by a certain set of standards defined by ISO/IEC 7810 and ISO/IEC 7816.
