Dry and wet rising mains are intended for use by the fire brigade or other trained personnel. Dry risers are vertical mains fitted into staircase enclosures or other suitable positions, constructed of 4'' galvanized steel throughout with outlet valves on each floor and an inlet fitted at ground level to enable the fire brigade to connect to the water supply. Wet risers are pipes kept permanently charged with water either from a storage tank (via a booster pump) or direct from the town's main water supply. A dry riser is a main vertical pipe intended to distribute water to multiple levels of a building or structure as a component of the fire suppression systems. The pipe is maintained empty of water. The dry riser is the opposite of a "wet riser" or "wet standpipe" system where the pipes are kept full of water for manual or automatic fire fighting operations. Dry risers have to have fire engine access within 18m of the dry riser inlet box.
| In a pre-action system the piping is pressurized with air or nitrogen, monitoring of this air pressure provides a means of supervising the system piping. Loss of the supervisory air pressure in the system piping results in a trouble signal at the alarm panel. A prealarm of a possible fire allows time for alternate fire extinguishment prior to a sprinkler discharge. In the event the fire cannot otherwise be extinguished, the preaction sprinkler system will then perform as the primary fire protection system. They are designed for applications such as refrigerated areas that require maximum protection against inadvertent operation of the sprinkler system. | |

| A fire pump is a part of a fire sprinkler system's water supply and can be powered by electricity or diesel. The pump intake is either connected to the public underground water supply piping, or a static water source (e.g., tank, reservoir, lake). The pump provides water flow at a higher pressure to the sprinkler system risers and hose standpipes. A fire pump is tested and listed for its use specifically for fire service by a third-party testing and listing agency, such as UL or FM Global. | |

Fire hose reels are located to provide a reasonably accessible and controlled supply of water to combat a potential fire risk. The length of a fully extended fire hose is 36 meters with a diameter of 19mm (outside diameter). These appliances are designed to deliver, as a minimum, 0.33L of water per second. A control nozzle attached to the end of the hose enables the operator to control the direction and flow of water to the fire. All fire hose reels come with a unique ball valve shut-off device, a plastic or solid brass hose reel nozzle and mounting bracket.
