Liquid Gilsonite ins and other asphaltic type materials penetrate shale pore spaces as a drill bit penetrates a formation. It is assumed that a plastic-flow mechanism will allow the asphaltite to extend into the pores of the shale, thus, reducing fluid loss or mud invasion with a tendency to bond the shale and prevent sloughing. Asphaltite plates out on the bore hole to thereby reduce fluid loss. Gilsonite Pulverized is relatively stable and of low hazard. however, it should not be stored or used near strong oxidizing agents such as chlorates, nitrates or peroxides. Excessive dust is subject to combustion or explosion upon contact with spark or open flame and should be minimized. use good industrial hygiene practice to avoid eye and excess skin contract. Roofing Gilsonite specification

Gilsonite is used in roofing materials primarily as an agent to lower the penetration of petroleum asphalt without aging or oxidizing the base asphalt. Lowering the penetration of the base asphalt in this way allows the base asphalt to maintain some of its flexibility while at the same time maximizing the asphalt's ability to withstand high temperatures without softening. Gilsonite is also used as a modifier to reach roofing specifications when air-blowing facilities are not available.

Gilsonite is also used by a number of manufacturers producing patching materials for roofing. Gilsonite is used to modify the patching materials and is distributed in containers to retail customers. Using Gilsonite as a modifier allows the product to remain pliable until applied, after which it permanently attaches to the treated surface.

Inking / Painting Gilsonite specification

The paint applications, Gilsonite is usually used in combination with bitumen (asphalt). In most cases, if Gilsonite is used alone, the final paint will be very hard and brittle after drying. If normal straight-run bitumen is used alone, the finished paint is too soft and tacky . Therefore, a combination of

Gilsonite and bitumen is used to achieve the desired hardness (penetration) and drying time of the finished paint. In addition to imparting hardness to the paint, Gilsonite is also increasing the paint's: (1) adhesion; (2) gloss; (3) chemical resistance; (4) water resistance; and (5) body. For hardness, Gilsonite has a zero (0) penetration (at 25C; 100 gm, 5 sec.) compared to the 60-70 pen, 80-100 pen or softer bitumens commonly available from petroleum companies or asphalt manufacturers. Approximately 90% of all bitumen is used for road construction and these hardness grades are acceptable for that purpose. However, they are too soft by themselves for the manufacture of paint and surface coatings which require hardness values around 5 penetration for acceptable paint drying. Paint films composed of bitumen alone are tacky if the penetration is more than 10, and are brittle if less than 4.

Asphalt /paving Gilsonite specification

Gilsonite is used as a performance-enhancing agent for asphalt mixes. Gilsonite-modified paving mixes achieve higher PG grades and incorporate perfectly into the asphalt blend with no need for high shear milling as is the case with many other modifiers. Gilsonite can partially or totally replace, or complement, the use of SBS polymers in modified asphalts at a fraction of the cost. Gilsonite-modified asphalts have higher stability, reduced deformation, reduced temperature susceptibility and increased resistance to water stripping than non-modified asphalts. Gilsonite is also used to make both solvent-based and emulsion pavement sealers with superior appearance and weathering properties.

How to mix Gilsonite with Bitumen?

Gilsonite application:

History of uses : The first known use of Gilsonite turned out badly - a blacksmith mistook the material for coal, and used it to fire up his forge. His shop almost burned down when hot liquid asphalt began leaking out of his furnace. Samuel Gilson began exploration of the region in 1886 and opened the first Gilsonite mine in 1888. He was a tireless promoter of Gilsonite as a wonder product, and it has a myriad of uses: A) it is distilled and heat-refined to produce high-octane automotive gasoline, diesel fuels, LPG, raw naphtha, lubricating oils, road oils, and asphalt paving products; B) Saturates roofing and building construction papers (tar paper); C) Base for paints, varnishes, anticorrosive coatings; D) Component of battery boxes; E) Insulating and waterproofing jackets for underground pipes; F) Stabilizer in non-smearing inks; G) Additive for oil-well slurries; H) Binder for wood fibers; I) High-BTU component of explosives; J) Can be heated and calcined to produce metallurgical grade carbon coke, and high-purity carbon electrodes for the nuclear power industry.

Bitumen

Dubai bitumen 60/70 and 80/100 also 40/50 is an oil based semi-solid hydrocarbon product produced by removing the lighter fractions (such as liquid petroleum gas, petrol and diesel) from heavy crude oil during the refining process. As such, it is correctly known as refined bitumen. In North America, bitumen is commonly known as asphalt cement or asphalt. While elsewhere, asphalt is the term used for a mixture of small stones, sand, filler and bitumen, which is used as a road paving material. The asphalt mixture contains approximately 5% bitumen. At ambient temperatures bitumen is a stable, semi-solid substance.

The vast majority of refined bitumen is used in construction: primarily as a constituent of products used in paving and roofing applications. According to the requirements of the end use bitumen is produced to specification. This is achieved either by refining process or blending. It is estimated that the current world use of bitumen is approximately 102 million tonnes per year.

Most UAE bitumen used for road contraction is bitumen 40/50, bitumen 60/70 and 80/100

Approximately 85% of all thebitumenproduced is used as the binder in asphalt for roads. It is also used in other paved areas such as airport runways, car parks and footways. Typically, the production of asphalt involves mixing sand, gravel and crushed rock withbitumen, which acts as the binding agent. Other materials, such as polymers, may be added to the bitumen to alter its properties according to the application for which the asphalt is ultimately intended. A further 10% of global bitumen production is used in roofing applications, where its waterproofing qualities are invaluable. The remaining 5% of bitumen is used mainly for sealing and insulating purposes in a variety of building materials, such as pipe coatings, carpet tile backing and paint. Common misunderstandings Petroleum bitumen is often confused with tar. Although bitumen and coal tar are similarly black and sticky, they are distinctly different substances in origin, chemical composition and in their properties. Coal tar is produced by heating coal to extremely high temperatures and is a by-product of gas and coke production. It was widely used as the binding agent in road asphalt in the early part of the last century, but has since been replaced by refined bitumen.Dubai bitumen 60/70is also sometimes confused with petroleum pitch which, although also derived from crude oil, is a substance produced by a different process from that used for refined bitumen. Petroleum pitches are the residues from the extreme heat treatment or cracking of petroleum fractions. Their properties and chemical composition are therefore quite different from those of bitumen. Naturally-occurring bitumen, sometimes also called natural asphalt, rock asphalt, lake asphalt or oil sand, has been used as an adhesive, sealant and waterproofing agent for over 8, 000 years. But it occurs only in small quantities and its properties are quite different from refined bitumen.

Scurea exporting Bitumen with origin of Canada, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, Argentina and Bahrain including Bitumen 10/20 , Bitumen 20/30 , Bitumen 30/40 , Bitumen 40/50 , Bitumen 60/70, Bitumen 80/100 , Bitumen 100/120. Bitumen is produced from selected crude oils through a process of fractional distillation. The crude oil is heated to temperatures of between 300 and 350 degrees Celsius and fed into a distillation column allowing the lightest fractions of the crude to separate, through vaporization, from the heavier fractions, which remain liquid. The higher boiling point fractions are then drawn - off via a heat exchanger and enter a vacuum distillation column. This process produces a "short residue" that is used to manufacture several grades of bitumen. The pressure and temperature conditions within the vacuum process will determine the hardness of the short residue, and as such the grade of bitumen produced. The short residue may be further modified by 'air blowing' in which air is passed through the residue at temperatures of 250 - 300 degrees Celsius. The above are the typical Penetration or Paving Grades of bitumen

Their wide temperature range prevents bleeding in high temperature applications. Oxidized bitumen can also be used in industrial applications like roofing, flooring, mastics, pipe coatings, electrical applications.

What is Oxidized Bitumen?

UAE Bitumen used in a wide variety of 'industrial' applications including roofing, flooring, pipe-coating etc. They are produced by passing air through soft bitumen/flux mixtures under controlled temperature conditions. British Standard grades (BS 3690) are normally designated by two numbers representing the mid-points of their softening point and penetration ranges. How to produceOxidized Bitumen(Blown Bitumen)?

Production process:

Bitumen heating to 265-270C

Transferring melted bitumen to blowing towers

Blowing air to bitumen

Cooling melted bitumen with water

Packing

Available UAE oxidized bitumen which is made by blown asphalt

The procedures of producing oxidised bitumen are as follows:

1. Continuous blowing procedure

2. Discontinuous blowing procedure

These two procedures are done by other two procedures named catalysis and anticatalysis.

Catalysis means adding some chemical material during the process In order to decrease blowing reaction time.

For the following reasons:

Ease and simplicity in changing blowing condition and have production with different grades as a result. Ease in generating the unit. Ease in technology and also low expense in investment. The discontinuous producing procedure is chosen. Technical point and operating conditions are as follows: The blowing should be done from the bottom of blowing tanker. The reaction between bitumen and air is calorific .If the heat produced during the mixture is high, the heat of reaction is controlled by water injection. Admixture of air and the volume of blowing air is two important variants in blowing process. In bitumen producing plant, bitumen 60/70 is usually got by blowing. In this case for making bitumen 90/15 or 85/25 distilled used oil or crude oil should be injected to the product according to the volume 20-25 % otherwise the fragility in bitumen lead to inferior production.Increasing the heating temperature, air injection amount, time and tower pressure increase the speed of production process reaction. The suitable temperature for production operation is 265-270C which should be controlled not to be ascended since in high temperature and in 288C intensity of reaction becomes more sever and incontrollable which lead to explosion in tower. The long time stay of bitumen in tower in any condition is not in favor of system and should be delivered to drum or empty tanker after being ready. If the liquid surface in blowing tower is low, not more than particular limit should be added to the system for the extra air gather in empty parts and lead to ignition nearly. And if the temperature is kept high, the inside heat of tower ascend fats and this issue cause inside explosion and endamage the system.

Blowning procedure of UAE bitumen

Blowning tower is filled up to 70%. Air injection is done in 190-232C. The final point of blowing is specified by sampling and testing of bitumen properties. Finally the temperature of product should be kept 150- 165 C in order to have loading and packing capability. The production process is as follows:The producing operation of oxidized bitumen mainly includes tank loading different steps, bitumen blowing, condenser external gases and packing. So in the beginning the loose bitumen shipped to the plant by tanker is transferred to the raw material store tanker. In order to transfer the bitumen easily to the blowing tower the burner is contrived at the bottom of the store tanker to heat them. It is necessary to say that if the blowing towers are empty, hot bitumen can be uploaded directly to them and blowing operation start. Since the volume of bitumen increases as a result of blowing and it may overflow, the blowing tower is filled up to 70 %. Air injection is usually done when the temperature of material reach to 190-230 C. For gradual heating and also pipes filling with the air is entered from the top of the tower and at the bottom the bitumen dispread monotonously in phase via nozzel then oxidation is done accordingly and the light molecule, volatile gases and steam are emitted from the top of the tower. Blowing operation is done in temperature range 215-290C but the suitable temperature is between 265 to 270C. The needed heat is provided by burner contrived at the bottom of the tower. The bitumen reaction is calorific so in order to prevent the explosion danger resulted from temperature increasing, the temperature can be controlled by water injection, burner extinguisher and air amount reducing.
