Cutback Bitumen

Cutback Bitumen ( Liquid Bitumen ) is Bitumen that is dissolved in a solvent . Typical solvents include Naptha, gasoline and kerosene, white spirit etc. The type of solvent controls the curing time while the amount determines the viscosity of the Cutback Bitumen.
The advantage Cutbacks have over Emulsions is a much higher residual Bitumen percent, typically over 80% compares with over 40-65% for Bitumen emulsions. The result is more Bitumen left on the roadway after curing, for the same volume of binder applied.
Cutback bitumen can be sprayed at quite lower temperaturescompared to the neat bitumen. The solventwill evaporate after application to leave the remainingmaterial similar in hardness to the original bitumen.
Cutback Classification
Cutbacks are divided into two classifications, Rapid-Curing (RC) and Medium-Curing (MC) depending on the solvent used. They are further defined by a number which indicates the minimum kinematic viscosity (fluidity) of the cutback.

Bitumen Emulsion

Bitumen emulsion consists of three basic ingredients: bitumen, water, and an emulsifying agent. Based on specifications it may contain other additives, such as stabilizers, coating improvers, anti-strips, or break control agents. It is well known that water and asphalt will not mix, except under carefully controlled conditions using highly specialized equipment and chemical additives.
Cationic emulsions may be used at ambient temperatures with aggregates, which need not be completely dry. Emulsions are less hazardous to use and can be applied in a wider range of conditions.
This type iswidely used in road construction and roadmaintenance. Bitumen cement will be remainedafter gradual evaporation of water. Presence ofwater as the solvent offers some advantages tothis bituminous binder. Environmental friendlyaspect, saving energy, easy handling and storage, cost effective, safety while operation, are all part of advantages of this type of bitumen.

Penetration Bitumen

Penetration Test determines the hardness of Bitumen by measuring the depth ( in tenths of a mm) to which a standard, and loaded needle will vertically penetrate in 5 seconds, a sample of Bitumen maintained at a temperature of 25 deg C ( 77deg F). Hence the softer the bitumen, the greater will be its number of penetration units.

Oxidized Bitumen

Oxidized Bitumen is produced by either Continuous or Staggered Blowing Process. Heated Penetration Grade Bitumen under controlled environment is blown with air which controls the Oil Content in the Bitumen while it oxidized. The different grades for suited applications produced are designated by two numbers to indicate the mid-points of their softening point and penetration ranges.
Application
Blown grade bitumen is widely used as an anti-slip layer compound in the piling industry, for manufacture of roofing felts, for sound dampening felts and under carriage sealant in the automobile industry, electric cable joint protection, joint filling compound, sealant compound and many others.
Technical Advantages
Durability
Flexibility
Water Resistant
Chemical Stability
Application
Blown grade bitumen shall be broken up into small pieces and heated slowly to the application temperature of 220C to 230C.

Viscosity Bitumen

Viscosity Bitumen:

Viscosity or VG grade is the bitumen based on its viscosity. In order tograde the bitumen based on viscosity, BIS revised IS-73-1992 specifications(Viscosity at 60C).

Based on this grading, thereare four types VG-10, VG-20, VG-30 & VG-40. A few qualification tests like specific gravity, water content, ductility, loss on heating & Farass breaking point were removed from IS:73-1992 as these tests do not have any relationship with the performance of the product.

The application of VG Bitumen is on spraying applications such as surface-dressing and paving in very cold climate. It is also used to manufacture Bitumen emulsion and Modified Bitumen products.
